What is Botox? Everything you need to know before your first treatment

Botox has become part of the modern beauty landscape. What was once considered niche or reserved for a very specific clientele is now widely accepted across all age groups and lifestyles. It sits comfortably alongside advanced facials, skin technologies and wellness treatments as part of a broader approach to looking and feeling your best.

There has also been a noticeable shift in who is choosing it. Botox is no longer a treatment associated with women alone. A growing number of men are incorporating it into their grooming and maintenance routines, often with a focus on looking more rested, less tense and more composed rather than “treated”.

Even so, for those considering it for the first time, there is often a degree of uncertainty. What exactly is Botox? How does it work? Will it look natural? And what should you realistically expect?

At Milfey Beauty, we believe that informed decisions lead to the best results. Understanding the science behind Botox, as well as the approach to treatment, is key.

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, a neuromodulator used in aesthetic medicine to temporarily relax targeted facial muscles.

It works by blocking the signals between the nerves and the muscles. When these signals are reduced, the muscle is no longer able to contract in the same way. This softens the movement that causes dynamic lines to form on the skin.

Dynamic lines are the lines that appear through repeated facial expressions. Over time, these expressions, such as frowning, squinting or raising the eyebrows, can become etched into the skin.

Botox addresses the underlying cause of these lines by reducing the muscle activity responsible for them.

How does Botox work?

From a clinical perspective, Botox acts at the neuromuscular junction.

When a nerve sends a signal to a muscle, it releases a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. This is what triggers the muscle to contract. Botox temporarily inhibits the release of acetylcholine, preventing the muscle from receiving that signal.

As a result, the treated muscle relaxes.

The skin above it then appears smoother, as it is no longer being repeatedly folded or creased in the same way.

This process is highly localised and carefully controlled. Only the specific muscles responsible for certain movements are treated, allowing the rest of the face to function as it normally would.

What areas can be treated?

Botox is most commonly used to treat the upper face, where dynamic expression lines tend to be most visible.

Typical treatment areas include:

  • The forehead, to soften horizontal lines

  • The frown lines between the eyebrows (often referred to as the “11 lines”)

  • Crow’s feet around the eyes

It can also be used more subtly in other areas, depending on the individual, including:

  • Brow lift, to create a more open eye area

  • Bunny lines on the nose

  • Chin dimpling

  • Jawline and masseter muscles for facial slimming or tension relief

  • Neck bands

Each treatment is tailored to the individual, taking into account muscle strength, facial structure and the desired outcome.

What results can you expect?

Botox does not create an immediate change.

Results typically begin to appear within 3 - 5 days, with the full effect visible after around 10 - 14 days.

The outcome is a softening of lines and a more relaxed appearance overall. The aim is not to remove expression, but to reduce the intensity of repetitive movements that lead to deeper lines over time.

When performed correctly, Botox should not look obvious. The face should still move naturally, just with less tension in specific areas.

Many clients describe the result as looking more rested, more open and more balanced.

How long does Botox last?

The effects of Botox are temporary.

Most treatments last between 3 - 6 months, depending on the individual, the area treated and factors such as metabolism and muscle activity.

Over time, the nerve signals gradually return and the muscle regains movement.

Regular treatments can help maintain the result and, in some cases, may reduce the strength of the muscle over time, leading to longer-lasting effects.

Is Botox safe?

When administered by a qualified and experienced practitioner, Botox is considered a safe and well-established treatment.

It has been used in both medical and aesthetic settings for many years and is one of the most researched treatments in aesthetic medicine.

As with any injectable treatment, there are potential side effects, though these are typically mild and temporary. They may include slight swelling, redness or bruising at the injection site.

A thorough consultation is essential to assess suitability and discuss any contraindications.

Will I look frozen?

This is one of the most common concerns, and often comes down to technique.

The “frozen” look is not the goal of modern aesthetic practice. At Milfey Beauty, the focus is on controlled, precise application that maintains natural expression.

Botox should soften, not erase. It should refine, not alter.

The right treatment plan will take into account how your face moves, ensuring that results look natural and balanced.

Is Botox only for wrinkles?

Not at all.

While Botox is best known for treating lines and wrinkles, it is also used preventatively. Many clients begin treatment before lines become deeply set, helping to slow their progression over time.

It can also be used for functional concerns, such as jaw tension, teeth grinding or excessive sweating.

In aesthetic terms, it is as much about maintaining skin quality and structure as it is about treating visible lines.

What happens at your first appointment?

Your first appointment will always begin with a consultation.

This is where your practitioner assesses your facial anatomy, muscle movement and skin condition. Your goals are discussed in detail, along with what is realistically achievable.

If treatment proceeds, a series of small injections are placed into the targeted muscles. The procedure itself is quick, often taking only a few minutes.

There is no significant downtime. Most clients return to normal activities shortly afterwards, following a few simple aftercare guidelines.

A modern approach to Botox

Botox has evolved significantly in recent years.

The emphasis is no longer on obvious results, but on subtlety, precision and maintaining individuality. It sits within a broader aesthetic approach that values balance, proportion and natural beauty.

At Milfey Beauty, Botox is not treated as a standalone procedure, but as part of a considered plan. One that works with your features, not against them.
